The Dream Is Over is the second album by Canadian punk rock band PUP, released on May 27, 2016, through Royal Mountain Records in Canada and SideOneDummy Records worldwide. The album was recorded with the financial support of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters. The album title comes from the doctor of lead singer Stefan Babcock, after the doctor found out about a problem with Babcock's vocal cords.

PUP’s second full length album, The Dream Is Over was released on May 27, 2016. The band had toured for over a year after their first album, playing 250+ shows with a catalog that still consisted only of songs from their first, self-titled album. When the time came to record a new album, the group was faced with the obstacle of their vocalist, Stefan Babcock, hemorrhaging his vocal cords. As outlined in a Noisey article from 2016, on the first day of a tour opening for Modern Baseball, Babcock learned that a cyst had developed on his vocal cords which ended up hemorrhaging.

PUP's second album is a glorious half-hour of redlining guitars and pile-on group chants that turn self-loathing and self-deprecation into a sort of superpower. Whereas most music of this sort never tries to sound like more than a couple guys in a room, PUP’s approach is so over-the-top that it can sound as CGI’d as any chart-pop; you have to see it in person just to find out if they can really pull this off. Can they really nail the heart-stopping segue between If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You and DVP ? How can anyone play as melodically and as fast as they do on DVP ? On every single chorus, the four members of PUP sound like 4000, is that really how it comes off in a room or is it because they rightfully expect everyone in the crowd to shout along?

MF: The Dream Is Over is an interesting title, is there a particular lyrical narrative the record follows that lead you to choose that title? SB: On the last tour, I had some fairly serious problems with my vocal cords. On the first day of the tour, I went to see a specialist, who diagnosed me with a vocal cyst and haemorrhaging (meaning my vocal cords were filling up with blood). She literally told me, word for word, The Dream Is Over. Which is such a fucking ridiculous thing for a doctor to say to their patient. Anyway, I found it to be pretty funny  . The Dream Is Over as a phrase is a sneer at the idea that Babcock & Co. would be forced to abandon something for which they’ve committed so much of their time and energy, but the album itself is an acknowledgement of the toll that being in a touring band takes on its members  . PUP’s sound has both matured and intensified since the release of their 2014 self-titled album. Even then, the Toronto outfit approached the explosive hardcore of Fucked Up at times, but here there’s an even wider expanse between those bilious screams and their more nuanced moments.

What happened to this album's sound quality? It sounds terrible for some reason, not by aesthetic or anything i listened to the same album multiple. i listened to the same album multiple times months on end but the quality just suddenly dropped when i listened today. im on high streaming quality, every other album from any other artists sounds fine. Just this one sounds bad. Same story when im on my phone.
