A blissfully good album, Rokku Mi Rokka is betrayed only by the tracks that bookend it. The opener '4-4-44 ' is an absurd and inappropriate attempt at a pop song. The woeful last track, 'Wake Up (It's Africa Calling)', features Neneh Cherry and producer Cameron McVey coming back to try to recapture the magic of '7 Seconds' and missing their target by several years. But it's OK; just start at track two and stop at track 10 and you have an almost perfect album. Welcome back, Youssou.

On 2007’s Rokku Mi Rokka (Give and Take) he draws from the music of northern Senegal. The fine vocalist is backed by tama ( talking drum ), xalam (possibly an ancestor of the banjo), various percussion instruments, as well as guitar, bass, and keyboards. 4-4-44 opens the album with delightful vocals and a supercharged horn section. Islamic elements, which play a role throughout Rokku, are in the foreground on Baay Faal, but the track also has a distinct West African lilt.

The result is a sparer album than many of N'Dour's previous mbalax releases, yet more nuanced and varied than some records made by the more fashionable desert-blues names. Do we need Neneh Cherry's run-of-the-mill rapping on the pop-orientated Wake Up (It's Africa Calling)? Not really. But the rest represents a thoughtful combination of cosmopolitanism and tradition. Not full of instant hooks, but give it time.
