Scottish percussionist. Glennie tours extensively in the northern hemisphere, spending up to four months each year in the United States, and performs with a wide variety of orchestras and contemporary musicians, giving over 100 concerts a year as well as master classes and "music in schools" performances; she frequently commissions percussion works from composers and performs them in her concert repertoire. She also plays the Great Highland Bagpipes and has her own registered tartan known as "The Rhythms of Evelyn Glennie"  . Shadow Behind the Iron Sun (1999). Even in her interpretations of works by other composers-such as James MacMillan's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel or the Grammy-nominated Concerto for Percussion by Joseph Schwantner-Glennie scoops out plentiful opportunities for improvisation; but the concept of Shadow Behind the Iron Sun was to allow Glennie to lock herself up in her studio and improvise the entire album. Evelyn Glennie is the most profound percussionist I have ever heard. Her music penetrates my body: sometimes I feel it in my heart, sometimes in my solar plexis. I feel it in my soul.

Recorded in 1999, Evelyn Glennie's improvised album Shadow Behind the Iron Sun was a collaborative effort between the virtuoso percussionist and her producer Michael H. Brauer. While Glennie's work is astonishing in itself and seems sufficient on its own strength to retain interest, other material has been added to her solo performances; the piano part, bird sounds, wordless vocals, and additional percussion licks provided by David Motion, Oliver Walker, Philip Smith, and David Hobson work against Glennie's raw sound; distract from her wild, spontaneous activity; and make. the album seem overproduced.

Evelyn Glennie has never been afraid to take risks. Her concert programmes and recordings challenge the conventions of classical music in equal measure through her championship of light entertainment and her advocacy of the contemporary avant-garde. In recent years Glennie has even broadened her range to make recordings with the Black Dyke Band, Bjork, the King’s Singers and Steve Martland. The wider public became aware of her own compositional preoccupations for the first time on her 1996 album ‘Drumming’.
