Album · 2014 · 12 Songs. Kettering, England’s Temples bring the psychedelic ‘60s to life. Just as the members of XTC once worked as The Dukes of Stratosphear to re-create a psychedelic glow of backward guitars, groovy organs, sitar-like 12-string guitars, thick rumbling basses, and oddly modulating harmonies all wrapped up in fuzztones, Temples now explore those sounds like Jack Nitzsche on a DIY budget. That's according to group leader and guitarist James Bagshaw, whose home served as the recording studio for Sun Structures.
Their debut album, Sun Structures, was released in 2014 and charted at number seven in the UK. They are signed to ATO Records and have toured internationally both as a support act and as the headliner. The band spent much of the first half of 2016 recording new material before embarking on a number of European festival dates The band released their second studio album, Volcano, on 3 March 2017. In early 2018, drummer Samuel Toms left the band to concentrate on his solo project Secret Fix, and has gone on to join Fat White Family.
UK rockers Temples' new Sun Structures reproduces the sounds of the psychedelic 1960s era with a painstaking, granular attention to detail. But the recreation is so studious that the album is devoid of individual personality. Noel Gallagher of Oasis, squinting recently at the bounteous musical landscape, dubbed the new Kettering-based quartet Temples "the best new band in Britain. If you've read anything about Temples, you've likely this already absorbed this fact.

His band Temples recorded their debut album in his mum’s spare room in Kettering, and although it’s a hugely impressive record of warm, retro psychedelic pop, there’s something a little too neat about ‘Sun Structures’. Other psych revivalists, such as Australian groups Tame Impala and Pond or Temples’ labelmates Toy, balance their knack for immersive production with the thrill of the wig-out live show. Temples go for a more tasteful approach. To some extent this approach pays off: there’s a definite time-warp charm to ‘Sun Structures’s array of booming tom-toms, psychedelic organs and chiming guitars. Early single ‘Shelter Song’ kicks off the album with an impeccable Beatlesque melody, whereas ‘Keep in the Dark’ and ‘A Question Isn’t Answered’ are punchy glam stomp-a-longs with nifty vocal harmonies.
LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Temples Format: Vinyl. Standout tracks: Shelter Song, Sun Structures, Keep In The Dark, Mesmerise, Colours To Life, A Question Isn't Answered. Oh yeah, and we'll all fall in love with James Bagshaw's hair.
