Brian Auger and the Trinity was a British musical ensemble led by keyboardist Brian Auger. His duet with Julie Driscoll, the Bob Dylan-penned "This Wheel's On Fire", was a hit on the 1968 UK Singles Chart. Their joint album, Open, billed as Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity, reached in the UK Albums Chart the same year. The group and Driscoll opened for Led Zeppelin at the Rose Palace in Pasadena, California on 2 and 3 May 1969.
The CD reissue on Disconforme has a bonus track, "What You Gonna Do?," of undisclosed origin; it's a standard Brian Auger soul-rock original, taken from a vinyl source by the sound of things, as surface noise can be heard.
Brian's group, The Trinity, encapsulated that odd period of time in the late 60s when mod was getting a little flowery and jazz, blues and rock musicians found a common ground in the happening London scene at subterranean clubs like The Cromwellian where mop tops and jazzers alike mingled in fab and groovy Lord Byron shirts. Definitely What! (1968) was Auger's first solo recording and his unique keyboard skills and offbeat humour are apparent throughout. 'George Bruno Money'' illustrates this brilliantly. Brian's Jimmy Smith jazz approach sits alongside that mildly camp Goons-like humour so in vogue at the time. This is the broad-minded musical attitude that really led to fusion or jazz-rock. The approach developed in Open and Definitely What come to fruition in the release of Streetnoise (1969) oft cited as the first fusion recording.

The album-ending "Definitely What" instrumental is as close as things come to even approaching prog but it fails miserably to be entertaining. As Auger explains in the liner notes, it was developed from "the idea of trying to play the organ as a conga drum one night when my drummer Clive was missing somewhere in a cloud of smoke. That revealing quip should tell you all you need to know about this jumbled mess of unrelated solos and noodlings. The album is like most other Trinity albums, loaded with brass arrangements that Auger, Ambrose and Thacker are now so used to. Overall I'd say that most of the covers would sound a bit like a made-for- supermarket music if it weren't for Ogre's huge "Aurgan" and his tempestuous interventions. Indeed covers of Beatles' Day In Life, If You Live (a straight blues) or JB's Body (the standard track) might sound a bit odd and even lame for an uncompromising proghead.
