Harry James And His Orchestra 1948-49 is a double album by American trumpeter Harry James with The Harry James Orchestra. The album consists of live radio transcripts recorded during 1948 and 1949 and was released in 1969 by Big Band Landmarks (Volumes X-XI). As bop surpassed swing by the late 1940s, James was surprisingly open to its influence.

During the 1948-49 era the trumpeter/leader and his band were somewhat influenced by bebop (even when playing swing standards) and they had their own sound before slipping back into nostalgia in the 1950s. As usual the main soloists (along with James) are trombonist Ziggy Elmer, altoist Willie Smith and tenor-saxophonist Corky Corcoran along with clarinetist Eddie Rosa and pianist Bruce MacDonald. With modern arrangements provided by Neal Hefti, Johnny Richards and Frank Devenport, the Harry James Orchestra sounds in peak form throughout this highly recommended set.

Elegant Freewheeling Laid-Back/Mellow Refined Stylish. The Uncollected Harry James & His Orchestra, Vol. 3 (1948-1949).
