Naked City is an album by John Zorn, originally released on Nonesuch Records in 1990. The band which would become known under the same name included Zorn on alto saxophone with Bill Frisell on guitar, Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Fred Frith on bass and Joey Baron on drums, and was established in 1988 as a "compositional workshop" to test the limitations of a rock band format. The album was rereleased as part of the box set Naked City: The Complete Studio Recordings on Zorn's Tzadik label in 2005.

Naked City was an avant-garde music group from New York City, New York, United States led by saxophonist and composer John Zorn, performed from 1988 to 1993. The ensemble was notable for remaining unconfined to any musical category, juxtaposing unrelated styles of music often within individual compositions at breakneck speed. Its music incorporated recognizable elements of jazz, grindcore, surf, classical, thrash, country music, punk rock and other genres.
Naked City grew out of an eclectic downtown Manhattan music scene in the late ’80s that coalesced around the original Knitting Factory. Punks went to see jazz combos; jazz musicians joined punk bands. You could see free jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor one night and Sonic Youth the next. Mike Doughty, the future lead singer of Soul Coughing, worked the door. The ringleader of Naked City was an angry 36-year-old saxophonist named John Zorn, who had been active as an experimental composer and musician for over a decade. A fan of both avant-classical experimenter John Cage and cartoon soundtrack composer Carl Stalling, Zorn spent much of his early career devising what he called game pieces : essentially, highly structured improvisations featuring a mix of jazz, rock, classical and unconventional instrumentation.

But Naked City the band differs from Naked City as a conceptual project, and over their next few albums Zorn pulled them into every possible direction. The title piece opens the album with a seventeen-minute creepshow of menacing sounds and flashes of violence; in the middle section, Zorn pays homage to modern composers like Ives, Scriabin, and Messiaen; and that's followed, as if because shit just got too quiet, by 34 cuts of their patented "thrash jazz.
