Album · 1984 · 11 Songs. Even in an era of radical post-punk, The Smiths is an utterly unique debut. From the woozy charms of Reel Around the Fountain, Morrissey’s fragile croon commences its love affair with Johnny Marr’s twinkling guitar. The band brings fire to You’ve Got Everything Now and This Charming Man, a Motown dance beat embroidered with slippery guitar. Gentle in its rage, Suffer Little Children takes on child abuse as no other band could, while the group’s singular allure glows within the dreamy licks of I Don’t Owe You Anything. The Smiths The Smiths.
Even Mozza's career has waned into boozy middle age. by contrast, their music together has transcended generations. The Smiths are true icons.
From the Smiths' first single, "Hand in Glove", in the spring of 1983, to their breakup barely four years later, everything about them seemed like a considered and ingenious decision: their name's undertones of both facelesness and creativity, the way each of their records began with a different sort of guitar tone, the tinted monochrome photos on their sleeves, their proudly ashamed . Rank, released after Morrissey had launched his solo career, is useful as the Smiths' only full-on live album, and as a document of the brief era when Craig Gannon was their second guitarist (the Queen Is Dead tour, basically).
