The album I have chosen is 1985's Meat Is Murder. The Smiths' eponymous debut is their most astonishing record, The Queen Is Dead their best, but Meat Is Murder is my favourite: freewheeling, exciting, political, with Morrissey's words and Marr's music interlacing perfectly. It starts as if in the middle of something – you're already part of this. Meat Is Murder is local and British from the first line – "Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools" – and expresses fury at a kind of school life that has been forgotten.

After their flawed but retrospectively admired debut album and the frankly adored stop-gap round-up of radio sessions and B-sides A Hatful Of Hollow, the Smiths' second album, Meat Is Murder, is often unloved in their canon for its occasionally overwrought and arguably contrived nature. While the production is more detailed than before, the Smiths are at their best when they stick to their strengths - "The Headmaster Ritual" and "I Want the One I Can't Have" are fine elaborations of the formula they laid out on the debut, while "Rusholme Ruffians" is an infectious stab at rockabilly.
