The Hebrides Ensemble makes a strong affirmative case in this collection of late Maxwell Davies works, including his final unfinished composition, a String Quartet Movement (2016), that quite hauntingly fades into the void. That, and most of the other music, is abstract in form but refers either explicitly or in general mood to the Orkney Islands, where Maxwell Davies spent much of his life. The String Trio quotes folk music, yet the music is not folkloric; it looks outward both geographically and musically from Scotland in fascinating ways.

Chamber Music by Peter Maxwell-Davies. BBC Music Magazine, November 2017, Mor. elease Date: 18th Aug 2017. Catalogue No: DCD34178. On its second Delphian album, the Ensemble reciprocates Davies's friendship with definitive performances of works from his last decade, including the single completed movement of a string quartet left unfinished at his death.

One of the great British composers and a former Master of the Queen’s Music. Peter Maxwell Davies, who has died aged 81 of leukaemia, was a huge figure in British postwar music – and a deeply enigmatic one. Through his staggering productivity as a composer, his visibility as a conductor and as someone with a high profile who was always willing to sign petitions for good causes, he seemed in one sense ubiquitous. Yet, in another he was a remote and elusive figure, his monk-like austerity and seriousness out of place in an era of conspicuous superfluity

The Hebrides Ensemble has been called "one of the great glories of Scotland" by Peter Maxwell Davies. It has specialized in contemporary music and commissioned more than 70 new works, many from Scottish composers. It recorded an album of works by Cresswell in 2001 on NMC and has also recorded for the Linn and Delphian labels; on the latter imprint it released The Last Island, a program of chamber music by Maxwell Davies, in 2017. Its output has not been restricted to Scottish music; it recorded an album of works by Messiaen on Linn in 2008, and its live programs often pair traditional repertory with new works, aiming to bring new insight to both. The Hebrides Ensemble is committed to using new media to broaden audiences for contemporary music.

Peter Maxwell Davies, an English composer and conductor, wrote music in many genres, notably ten symphonies and works for the stage, from the monodrama Eight Songs for a Mad King (first performed in 1969) to The Hogboon (scheduled to be performed in June 2016).
