A singing cowboy was a subtype of the archetypal cowboy hero of early Western films, popularized by many of the B-movies of the 1930s and 1940s. The typical singing cowboys were white-hat-wearing, clean-shaven heroes with the habit of showing their emotions in song. Around the campfire, the original cowboys sang of life on the trail with all the challenges, hardships, and dangers encountered while pushing cattle for miles up the trails and across the prairies

The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. The album is famous due to its role as a touchstone for the American folk music revival in the 1950s and 1960s

Movie cowboys started singing in the 1930s, and cowboy singers still perform today. Hollywood's Singing Cowboys. Westerns were a Hollywood staple from the beginning. Ken Maynard (1895-1973) became the first singing cowboy in the 1929 film, The Wagon Master. Born in Indiana, Maynard worked at carnivals and circuses at the age of 16, and was an excellent horseman. He worked as a rider for Ringling Brothers, signing with Fox Studios when the circus played in Los Angeles. Those are great nuggets of trivia! Thanks for sharing. I realized that Autry was channeling Rodgers at first, but it looks like it was more than that. I got most of the information on Walser from the Rough Guide, which is a great book. I highly recommend it as an excellent overview of country music, with sections on each subgenre.

All-Time Great Singing Cowboys. This entertaining compilation gathers some of the best-known recordings of such well-known singing cowboys as Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter, and Gene Autrey, as well as their less-storied sidekicks, who include Cole Wilson, Jack Guthrie, and Kenny Roberts. Featuring the Sons of the Pioneers' rollicking "Cigareets and Whuskey and Wild, Wild Women" and classic "Cool Water," as well as Rogers' popular "A Four-Legged Friend" and Rex Allen's light-hearted "Who Shot the Hole in My Sombrero?," this double CD celebration of the Wild West is a engagingly.
