Futurama is the second album by the band Be-Bop Deluxe, released in 1975. After the line-up of Be-Bop Deluxe changed, the band recorded the album with founder member Bill Nelson (guitars, keyboards and vocals), Charlie Tumahai (bass and backing vocals) and Simon Fox (drums). The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales and produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who also produced Queen. Futurama was released in July 1975 by record label Harvest.
Be Bop Deluxe second album Futurama isnīt really a prog rock album itīs rather a continuation of the guitar based rock music that was introduced on their debut Axe Victim. I liked Axe Victim and especially Bill Nelsonīs guitar playing. Itīs exactly the same with Futurama. The music isnīt that exciting and the vocals are below average but that guitar playing is worth a lot of attention. The songs are generally not very proggy being mostly guitar driven rock but there are a few songs where prog tendencies are hinted at. Sound Track and Swan Song are the most prominent examples of that.
The original version of Futurama was a little weak on songwriting content, though long on virtuoso music passages. This expanded reissue is a partial improvement, though not because it addresses those problems; rather, it's just got more of something different, in this case the more commercial (and quite beautiful) single version of "Between the Worlds," plus a scintillating live version of "Maid in Heaven," and the achingly lyrical "Speed of the Wind" - the latter shows off the more.
