Alexander Ilyich Siloti (also Ziloti, Russian: Алекса́ндр Ильи́ч Зило́ти, Aleksandr Iljič Ziloti, Ukrainian: Олександр Ілліч Зілоті; 9 October 1863 – 8 December 1945) was a Russian pianist, conductor and composer. His daughter, Kyriena Siloti, was also a noted pianist and teacher in New York and Boston until her death in 1989, aged 94. Alexander Siloti was born on his father's estate near Kharkiv, Ukraine (then part of Imperial Russia).
Although Emil von Sauer is viewed by many as the greatest of Liszt’s pupils that made recordings, those who met him were struck by his simple, direct, unaffected manner. These could be counted on the fingers-Friedheim, Rosenthal, Reisenauer, Stavenhagen, Siloti, Dayas, van de Sandt, S. Liebling, Göllerich, and several others The rest simply did not belong there-and, what was worse, they often hindered the advancement of those who were really gifted. Emil von Sauer died in Vienna on 27 April 1942. The records of Emil von Sauer were first brought to my attention during a visit to the International Piano Archive in 1974 by it’s founder and then director Gregor Benko. I suppose I was a typical piano enthusiast, in that I had come to the archive to hear the recordings of Josef Hofmann, Alfred Cortot, Ignaz Friedman, and the like.
He was a pupil of Franz Liszt and one of the most distinguished pianists of his generation. Josef Hofmann called von Sauer "a truly great virtuoso. Martin Krause, another Liszt pupil, called von Sauer "the legitimate heir of Liszt; he has more of his charm and geniality than any other Liszt pupil.

Arthur Friedheim Russian 26 October 1859 19 October 1932 was a Russianborn concert pianist who was one of Franz Liszts foremost pupils. Friedheim was born in Saint Petersburg in 1859. He began serious study of music at age eight. He later studied for a year with noted pianist Anton Rubinstein but disapproved of Rubinstein's disorganized teaching methods and went instead to Liszt. At first Liszt did not like Friedheim's playing, though he admitted the individuality of Friedheim's style. He made three recordings for Columbia around 1912. One of these is considered a curiosity-a rendition of the funeral march from Chopin's Second Piano Sonata in which Friedheim plays to the end of the trio and, having no more room on the record, simply stops. He was apparently content to record just two-thirds of the piece. He also recorded many piano rolls for the Welte, Hupfeld, and Duo-Art systems.
Siloti taught at the Juilliard School from 1924 until 1942. When he died, in 1945, he left no commercial recordings, interest in his transcriptions had declined, and his achievements as an impresario had been superseded by those of Sergey Koussevitzky and others. In the introduction Barber recalls first learning of Siloti in 1973 at a performance by Emil Gilels in Vancouver. As an encore, Gilels performed a Bach transcription by Siloti. Beguiled by what he had heard, Barber subsequently visited a shop in New York to look for scores but instead was introduced to Siloti's daughter Kyriena, who offered him a twenty-minute interview.
