Jefferson Airplane Takes Off is the debut studio album by the American rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in August 1966 as RCA Victor LSP-3584 (stereo) and LPM-3584 (mono). The personnel differs from the later "classic" lineup: Signe Toly Anderson was the female vocalist and Skip Spence played drums. Both soon left the group-Spence in May 1966, Anderson in October-and were replaced by Spencer Dryden and Grace Slick, respectively.
Surrealistic Pillow is the second studio album by American rock band Jefferson Airplane, released on February 1, 1967, by RCA Victor (LSP-3766 and LPM-3766 ). It is the first album by the band with vocalist Grace Slick and drummer Spencer Dryden. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard album chart and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA.
While Takes Off is certainly not Pet Sounds or Rubber Soul, it is filled with delightful three part harmonies that are both intrinsically and beautifully sung, an album that existed in that fragile moment in time, a time that may not come again for another several generations. This was a deeply considered album at this stage in recording history, hands down, the mono version is absolutely the best, as the recording space was constructed and considered to capture the band’s sound in mono surroundings. As with The Beatles, stereo was a secondary consideration. Signe Toly Anderson, the group's original lead singer, died at the age of 74. She sang on the band's 1966 debut album Jefferson Airplane Takes Off before leaving the group to be replaced by Grace Slick.

The debut Jefferson Airplane album was dominated by singer Marty Balin, who wrote or co-wrote all the original material and sang most of the lead vocals in his heartbreaking tenor with Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson providing harmonies and backup. Anderson's lead vocal on "Chauffeur Blues" indicated she was at least the equal of her successor, Grace Slick, as a belter.
