This album had a strong influence from Eastern European culture as Brubeck used many of their rhythms and time signatures. The complex rhythms he uses sound unique yet very natural and easy to listen to, probably the reason for it's success. It was 1956 and many big bands were struggling due to the rise of bebop and modern small group format. Jazz At Massey Hall - The Quintet This album appears reissued under the name "The Greatest Concert Ever". It is an all star lineup of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach; all who were prominent in the development of bebop about 15 years beforehand (1953) and thus were all seasoned veterans by the time of the concert. Eclipse, the new album by piano prodigy Joey Alexander, was recorded in just over three days. It features contributions from saxophonist Joshua Redman, bassist Reuben Alexander, and drummer Erick Harland, and its sound ranges from classical jazz to gospel. This album represents who I am, says Alexander, and I’m looking forward to bringing people on the journey. KENNY BARRON QUINTET – Concentric Circles (Blue Note Records) Release date: May 4. Pianist Kenny Barron celebrates his 75th birthday and the 50th year of his recording career with a new album. West Coast jazz mavericks The Pyramids, led by saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, are releasing their third album since reuniting in 2012 after disbanding in the 1970s. An Angel Fell mixes soulful afro-funk with astral jazz. It was recorded at Quatermass studios in London, United Kingdom, and features album artwork by Lewis Herz.
Early New Orleans jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, modal jazz, hard bop, free jazz, third stream, and fusion are all represented, though not equally. We have tried not to overdo it with expensive boxed sets and obscure imports; sometimes it couldn’t be helped. Fats Waller, Handful of Keys (Proper, 2004; tracks recorded 1922-43).
From that album they released ‘One Mint Julep’ in early 1961, and it made N. on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chat. Ironically, however, by that time Taylor was at Verve, having been lured away by a bigger roster of artists and a more lucrative contract. Impulse! would go on to sign John Coltrane, whose 1965 album A Love Supreme would become another jazz landmark
