The Scream is the debut studio album by British alternative rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Recorded in one week and mixed in three during August 1978, it was released on 13 November 1978 by record label Polydor. Before the album's release, the band had developed a strong reputation as a live act, and had achieved a Top 10 UK single with "Hong Kong Garden" (which did not appear on the original album).

Politically, the UK was part grey Orwellian uber-state, part suburban dream zone. The Banshees are probably best remembered for the hits  period when Siouxsie, Severin, McGeough and Budgie were regular, if somewhat strange, fixtures in the pop charts. Sheet metal guitar, pounding, tribal drums and Siouxsie’s part Nico-esque dominatrix meets primal yelp vocals made The Scream unlike anything else released that year. The Banshees had left punk pogoing and spitting firmly in their rear-view mirror with an album as unexpected as it was ground-breaking. I saw The Banshees at the Glasgow Apollo the month before the album’s release (with Spizzoil and Simple Minds bottom of the bill. 0 a ticket, too!) and the live power of the original line-up was hugely at odds with their then reputation as non-musicians.
