The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to mid-13th century. They built in the midst of their hermitages a chapel which they dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, whom they conceived of in chivalric terms as the "Lady of the place

The site of the Mount Carmel church and convent was part of a sugar cane mill owned by Adorna. Brother Manoel da Piedade founded the convent, which was constructed between 1715 and 1722. 15 friars and 12 brothers occupied the building by 1743; the low occupancy of the buildings in this period indicates the building was not fully functioning. The church was constructed between 1752 and 1759 under Father Antônio de Belém Lemos
