Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Philadelphia Orchestra deliver a rousing Also sprach Zarathustra, an exciting Don Juan, an amusing Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, and a monumental Ein Heldenleben using the composer's alternative conclusion. The Philadelphians play with their accustomed blend of blazing virtuosity and burnished elegance, and Sawallisch leads them with a steady hand and a clear head. Ranked against recordings by such masterful Strauss conductors as Böhm and Karajan, though, Sawallisch 's are more middling than top-of-the-mountain performances
The Philadelphia Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One of the "Big Five" American orchestras, the orchestra is based at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, where it performs its subscription concerts, numbering over 130 annually, in Verizon Hall. Wolfgang Sawallisch succeeded Muti as Music Director from 1993 to 2003. He made a number of recordings with the orchestra of music of Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner, among other composers, for the EMI label. However, the orchestra lost its recording contract with EMI during this time, which led to a musicians' strike for 64 days in 1996. Near the end of Sawallisch's tenure, the orchestra released a self-produced set of recordings of the Schumann symphonies with Sawallisch conducting.

This album features both sides of Strauss’s musical persona with the Burleske in D minor as well as Ein Heldenleben. While the former is a playful, miniature quasi concerto for piano and orchestra, the latter epitomises Strauss’s symphonic style: majestic, virtuosically orchestrated, full of grand ideas, but never without irony. In that respect, Ein Heldenleben has more in common with Burleske than one would expect. Strauss’ arguably satirical self-identification with the hero of his symphonic poem is underlined by recurrent self-quotations from previous compositions
Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra in D Major. Richard Woodhams, oboe. Wolfgang Sawallisch, conductor. Album: Strauss: Ein Heldenleben, Etc, Sawallisch, Philadelphia.
Richard Strauss takes a very important place in Mariss Jansons musical work with late romantic repertoire: "His music has accompanied me my whole life and it moves me deeply", says the Maestro about the orchestra virtuoso and sensual soundartist from Garmisch. This recording collects orchestral pieces and songs by Richard Strauss. Soprano soloist is Anja Harteros.
The Heldenleben is another superb achievement. This hero is less the armchair-bound Colonel Blimp of, say, Mariss Janssons – I always think Mahler nailed his carping critics far more effectively in the Rondo-Burleske movement of his Ninth Symphony than Strauss does. Sawallisch also resists the tendency to slow down unduly in the two quieter sections, which can turn them into a becalmed and interminable coda. Opting for the ending without horns also works better. First, it’s exciting to hear the great Philadelphia Orchestra in such fine form. It augurs well for Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s tenure. And second, Daniil Trifonov seems headed towards the for once the hype is real stratosphere on the strength of his first studio recording for DG.
