John Richard Baldwin (born 3 January 1946), better known by his stage name John Paul Jones, is an English musician and record producer who was the bassist and keyboardist in the rock band Led Zeppelin. Prior to forming the band with Jimmy Page in 1968, he was a session musician and arranger. After the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, Zeppelin disbanded and Jones developed a solo career

Jones' debut album, 1966's My Way, found him and/or his record company seemingly determined to follow a far more all-around pop entertainer sound than Paul had trodden as the lead singer of Manfred Mann. Such strategies rarely yield fruitful results, and that was the case here, with a set list that, in trying to please everybody, came up short all around. These are highlighted by the EP versions of "Privilege" and "Free Me" (the latter reworked by Patti Smith in the mid-'70s), although be aware that this is not the same version of "Free Me" as the one on the soundtrack to the Privilege film. There's also Jones' second and last . Top Ten hit, "I've Been a Bad, Bad Boy," as well as an unexpected blast of pure blues with the B-side "Sonny Boy Williamson," co-written by Jack Bruce, who also plays bass on the song.

John Paul Jones was a Revolutionary War hero known as the father of the . Born in Scotland in 1747, Jones came to America as a merchant sailor.

John Paul Jones will forever be remembered as the musical Swiss Army knife who helped propel Led Zeppelin to some of the greatest heights that any rock band has ever reached. When it came time for the group to work on their next Beck-less album, Little Games, producer Mickie Most called in his ace in the hole John Paul Jones to lay down a bit of bass and put together some cello arrangements. Jones contributions weren’t small either: He performed on the tracks Ten Little Indians, No Excess Baggage and Goodnight Sweet Josephine in place of the Yardbirds’ nominal bassist Chris Dreja, who switched over from rhythm guitar when Page originally joined up.

John Paul Jones' victory inspired his French allies and the young country that was very much embroiled with land battles. He received many military honors and a special gold medal-which he helped design-was struck to commemorate the victory. One side showed his handsome profile and the other had a likeness of the victorious but doomed Bon Homme Richard. Learn More in the Library. This article has only sketched John Paul Jones' brilliant and tempestuous life.
