Jimmy Yves Newman, known to Grand Ole Opry fans as Jimmy C. Newman, died June 21. He was 86, and suffered from cancer. For more than 50 years, Mr. Newman was a mainstay on the Opry, where he performed rollicking, Cajun-inflected songs such as "Alligator Man" and "Bayou Talk. Aug. 29, 1927 - June 21, 2014. His 1974 recording of "Lache Pas La Patate" sold more than 200,000 copies in Canada, and his 1991 "Alligator Man" album with his band, Cajun Country, received a Grammy nomination. Never a chart dynamo, he was a steadily entertaining personality for a majority of country music's commercial life and a spice of life for more than a half-century on the Opry.

Newman had several country hits in the 1950s, including the often covered "Cry, Cry Darling," but his Cajun-tinged hit "Alligator Man" a decade later turned him increasingly in the direction of traditional Louisiana two-step material, although his approach was never strictly purist, as evidenced by the fuzz-tone guitar that dominates the version of "Big Mamou" that is included here. Burke, famous for his flamboyant fiddle style and supercharged live performances, had his first hit with the same "Big Mamou" tune in 1974, also included here.
