But Virtue opener Leave It in My Dreams plays to Casablancas’ innate strengths while weirding things up in just the right ways: his bleary-eyed melancholy and d delivery give way to a disarming emotional payoff, as guitarists Amir Yaghmai and Jeramy Gritter spaz out over the song’s breezy strut. Casablancas and co. scatter these sort of pop reprieves across Virtue, wisely deploying them whenever it feels like the album is starting to crumble under the weight of its excesses.

The Voidz‘ sophomore album, Virtue, was created with a goal in mind: to be a part of the mainstream music industry without losing their artistical value. Casablancas said in an interview with Revista Playlist: We want to get to the mainstream to put there music that matters. They intended to do something more universal with Virtue, more appealing to a wider audience.

Virtue is an American Grammy-nominated gospel music trio. The group currently consists of sisters Ebony Holland, Karima Kibble and Heather Martin. The group was formed in 1994 by Karima Trotter (Kibble), Ebony Trotter (Holland), Negelle Sumter, and Shavonne Sampson.

On their second album, The Voidz combine thought-provoking quirks and fun. When Julian Casablancas returned with his second non-Strokes record in 2014 (The Voidz‘s ‘Tyranny’) the world seemed bemused by the path he was taking. Virtue’ is an easier listen – slightly. Not so much so that The Voidz lose their eccentric inventor touch, but just enough that there are a handful of pop-leaning moments present among the boundary-pushing ones. The frontman told Billboard recently they’d made the album more people-friendly because they want to be able to afford to keep doing – but if there was even the tiniest hint of cynicism at the root of the record, it doesn’t show.
