Salome, Op. 54, is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss. Strauss dedicated the opera to his friend Sir Edgar Speyer. The opera is famous (at the time of its premiere, infamous) for its "Dance of the Seven Veils". The final scene is frequently heard as a concert-piece for dramatic sopranos.

Ljuba Welitsch (soprano). Another such fabled fusion was Fritz Reiner and the music of Richard Strauss. The very first recordings Reiner made at the helm of the Chicago Symphony in March 1954 were Strauss’s ‘Ein Heldenleben’ and ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’. Among the earliest of RCA’s commercial stereo recordings, these interpretations are still benchmarks.
Conductor: Fritz Reiner. Composer: Richard Wagner, Johann II Strauss, Richard Strauss. Audio CD (October 14, 1996). The Cincinnati Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony and finally the Chicago Symphony were three irrefutable evidences of his untamed stubbornness, apart of his invaluable contribution during four years with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The first CD is entirely devoted to Richard Wagner. The powerful fierceness is harmoniously tied intermingled with lyrical robustness (and not sophisticated sentimentalism). The second CD is a true revelation.
