The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata, is a piano sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was completed in 1801 and dedicated in 1802 to his pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi.

Maria Joao Pires's disc Beethoven: Sonatas "Quasi una fantasia" is an unusual grouping, but the way she plays the sonatas, it makes perfect sense. And the first–the traditionally underrated O. 7 No 1–gains greatly through its juxtaposition. The singing line of its gentle opening movement is here underpinned by a tensile strength, which continues on through the spare octaves of its second movement until we arrive at the plangent warmth of the Adagio; the final Allegro is imbued with a joyful sense of release. Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. Although originally not intended to be a meaningful whole, as a set they compose one of the most important collections of works in the history of music. Hans von Bülow called them "The New Testament" of the piano literature (Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier being "The Old Testament").
