Dutch player Ronald Brautigam, who plays both fortepiano and modern instruments, has received widespread praise for his ongoing series of Beethoven piano sonatas, and this disc, the fourth in the series, does not disappoint. Several Brautigam recordings have featured instruments temporally very closely matched to the music being played, and the fortepiano here, a 2001 copy of an 1802 instrument, seems ideally matched to Beethoven's intentions. The definition of contrasts between its registers is startling. Hear the final movement of the "Moonlight" sonata, track 11 - it's.
Beethoven: Complete Bagatelle (Complete Works For Solo Piano Vo. 0). I cannot praise these performances by Ronald Brautigam of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas nos 21 to 25 highly enough. To be honest I was put off by the fortepiano sound at first, which has a good bit more "ping" than would be found on the usual Steinway or Baldwin or Bosendorfer. In the typical concert grande piano, the elements of wood and iron and steel wire produce a sound that is much more of a blend of these elements, so that no single element predominates.

After an epic nine-album project recording Beethoven's 32 numbered sonatas, early sonatas and sonatinas, Ronald Brautigam embarks on the second leg of his traversal of the composer's music for solo piano. This volume, released in 2011, includes the complete Bagatelles: not only the three sets published during Beethoven’s lifetime, but also 13 additional pieces written throughout his career. Brautigam performs the various works on two different fortepianos to accurately represent the same type of instrument Beethoven would have had at his disposal when writing them.
