Seine Konzepte für Bläserquintett nehmen in seinem Schaffen einen zentralen Raum ein. 1969 gründete er das Manfred Schulze Bläserquintett, daß er mit wechselnder Besetzung bis zu seiner schweren Erkrankung 1991 leitete.
