Mind Over Matter is the 5th song and title track of Young the Giant’s second album. The band released the track prior to the album as its third single, after It’s About Time and Crystallized. The track was the first song that the band wrote for the album. According to lead singer Sameer Ghadia, overcoming writer’s block for this song was a major inspiration for the rest of the album. On their hotly anticipated sophomore album, Mind Over Matter, Orange County modern rockers Young the Giant skate even closer toward the big-budget glitz their 2011 debut promised. Propelled by the success of their breakout hit, "Cough Syrup," they've made the jump to Warner subsidiary Fueled by Ramen, home to acts like Panic! At the Disco and Paramore, a seemingly more relatable roster than at their former home, the metal-centric Roadrunner Records.

Mind Over Matter, then, is the story of Young the Giant’s journey to understanding this pressure as an obstacle to their progression as a band. Rather than overcoming it, the band quite literally put mind over matter and simply sought to understand it as part of their story. Sameer further explained the concept in another interview with Rolling Stone: The idea of Mind Over Matter could be many different things, but for us it was a little mantra of trying to get past these certain obstacles that one makes three-dimensional, but which are actually a figment of our own imagination

Young the Giant too often get themselves stuck in a mid-tempo rut that makes the LP feel even longer than its 53 minute duration, with only the affecting ‘Camera’ and funky ‘Eros’ standing out. One area of advancement shown here is thematical focus and cohesion, since there are constant – but not overbearing – references to paralysis and succumbing to pressure.

Meldal-Johnsen’s subtle, densely textured aesthetic is ideal for the expansive, guitar-driven rock on Mind Over Matter. While the majority of the album is filled with hard-driving anthems and shout-along choruses ( Crystalized, Anagram, It’s About Time ), the band also incorporate textures of jazz, darkwave, and electropop to offer a riveting and unpredictable ride

Some careers are built slowly, album after album showing a band growing into their own, finding a sound, perfecting that sound (see: The National). A very, very rare few crush it out of the gate, dropping a goddamn near perfect first album and then keeping it up as the years progress (see: Arcade Fire). Young the Giant’s best asset has always been the tremendous power and range of lead singer Sameer Gadhia’s vocals. At points it feels like Mind Over Matter producer Justin Meldal Johnson bent over backward to create mixes that could compete with Gadhia’s strength. Virtuosic talents like Gadhia’s often sound best when given room to breathe and expand, as on Young the Giant’s God Made Man or Mind Over Matter’s Firelight, where a simple plucked guitar line and atmospheric tones serve as a platform, not competition for Gadhia.
