We're Only in It for the Money is the third studio album by the Mothers of Invention. Released on March 4, 1968, on Verve Records, it was subsequently remixed and re-recorded by Frank Zappa and reissued by Rykodisc in 1986. As with the band's previous two albums, We're Only in It for the Money is a concept album, and satirizes left and right-wing politics, particularly the hippie subculture, as well as the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
All the music heard on this album was composed, arranged & scientifically mutilated by Frank Zappa (with the exception of a little bit of surf music). they are all the product of electronically altering the sounds of normal instruments. The orchestral segments were conducted by Sid Sharpe under the supervision of the composer".
Its patchwork of musical elements-more of that patented avant-weirdness, doo-wop harmonies and deliberately funny voices, found sounds (including snorts, whispered dialogue from engineer Gary Kellgren and a telephone conversation in which a female caller, ostensibly Pamela Zarubica, . Suzy Creamcheese, tells the other party, He’s gonna bump you off, yeah; he’s got a gun, you know )-. The whole of We’re Only In it for the Money is just under 40 minutes total, encompassing uptempo tracks, ballads and the aforementioned studio explorations. Frank Zappa, both with and without the Mothers of Invention, would never stop seeking new ways to express himself, until the end of his life.
We’re Only in It for the Money still managed to reach No. 30 – Zappa’s best showing until Apostrophe became his only Top 10 album in 1974 – and build a small reputation as a counterculture classic. Several of its songs – including "Are You Hung Up?," "Who Needs the Peace Corps?," "Absolutely Free," "Let’s Make the Water Turn Black" and "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" – rank among Zappa’s best
Zappa and the Mothers of Invention returned to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968. Despite being a success with fans in Europe, the Mothers of Invention were not faring well financially. Their first records were vocally oriented, but Zappa wrote more instrumental jazz and classical oriented music for the band's concerts, which confused audiences. In 1993, Zappa released Ahead of Their Time, an album of previously recorded material by the original Mothers of Invention lineup.
