Founded in 1954 by Elmer Iseler as the Festival Singers of Toronto, the choir was first heard on CBC radio in a 1955 Good Friday broadcast of Bach's Christ lag in Todesbanden. Initially consisting of only 25 voices, the choir expanded to 32 voices and attracted international attention for their work in the early 1960s with Igor Stravinsky. Their recording of Symphony of Psalms, conducted by Stravinsky, was nominated in 1965 for a Grammy Award. Tenor Gordon Wry was one of the founding singers of the chorus.
Founded in 1954 by ELMER ISELER (with encouragement from the singers Tom (singer) Brown, Joanne Eaton, and Gordon Wry), the 25-voice choir was heard first on CBC radio in a 1955 Good Friday broadcast of Bach's Christ lag in Todesbanden. Shortly thereafter, billed as the Festival Chorus, the choir gave three concerts at the 1955 STRATFORD FESTIVAL, two of them with the Hart House Orchestra under BOYD NEEL. The Festival Singers' first Toronto seasons won them recognition as one of the outstanding choirs of the day. Their concerts, unaccompanied or with a small ensemble, began to be broadcast often by the CBC. Expanding to 32 voices, the singers attracted international attention for their work in the early 1960s with Igor Stravinsky.

The CBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stravinsky and the Festival Singers of Toronto under the direction of Elmer Iseler have left us a performance that has not lost its appeal since it was recorded in 1963. In the last movement above all, Stravinsky provides an object lesson on how to implement his conception.
Poulenc finished his Mass in G, a missa brevis (with no Credo), in 1937 and dedicated it to his father a mere 20 years after his death. Standards are high and, with the Motets for Christmas and Easter, as well as the Sept Chansons, this is well worth the budget price. The silvery quality of the Elora Festival Singers sopranos is brightly to the fore in the Kyrie of the Mass, their vibrato-free production facilitating a vernal tonal quality, which suits the music well. Performance Recording -BBC Music Magazine, July'15.
The two sets of motets that close the album are popular works among choirs of all kinds. The sound from a small church in Elora is clear and entirely appropriate. A superior Poulenc release.
Motets by Francis Poulenc. Poulenc returned to sacred music first in 1937 when he composed the missa brevis Messe en sol majeur (Mass in G). He then wrote the four motets, at different times. He wrote "Timor et tremor" last, in Noizay in January 1939, and dedicated it to Monsieur l'Abbé Maillet. He composed "Vinea mea electa" there in December 1938 and dedicated it to Yvonne Gouverné. Tenebrae factae sunt" was the first of the four motets, written there in July, dedicated to Nadia Boulanger. Poulenc composed "Tristis est anima mea" in Paris in November 1938 and dedicated. Sonata for two clarinets (1918). Sonata for clarinet and bassoon (1922). Sonata for horn, trumpet and trombone (1922).
