Om is a 1968 album by John Coltrane recorded in October 1965. Om refers to the sacred syllable in Hinduism, which symbolizes the infinite or the entire Universe. Coltrane described Om as the "first syllable, the primal word, the word of power"
Condemned by many critics as John Coltrane's worst album, Om suffers only in comparison to the great works that preceded it. Also issued in 1965, Ascension had stunned the jazz world with the blunt force of its innovation - a swirling maelstrom of noise, it was an answer to the challenge that had been posed by Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz several years earlier

An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone

This John Coltrane piece is spectacular! The world owes a debt to this. I feel very fortunate to have come across it at this time as it is very pertinent to my spiritual life. This is a good album, but not the kind of music you'll love at first listen. First time I heard Om, my thought was something like, "So that's what you get when you let a bunch of acid-eating jazz musicians studying Far East religions cut loose in the studio for a half-hour. What the fork? This is a complete embarassment". Now that I've given the album a second (and third) chance, it's more like, "So that's what you get when you let a bunch of acid-eating jazz musicians studying Far East religions cut loose in the studio for a half-hour
