Africa/Brass is the eighth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Impulse! Records, catalogue A-6. The sixth release for the fledgling label and Coltrane's first for Impulse!, it features Coltrane's working quartet augmented by a larger ensemble to bring the total number of participating musicians to 21. Its big band sound, with the unusual instrumentation of French horns and euphonium, presented music very different from anything that had been associated with Coltrane to date.

Sunday Afternoon Small Gathering. One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note. 2005 was a watershed year for unreleased music by John Coltrane. First there was the unbelievable Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane Live at Carnegie Hall. Now Impulse offers this double CD of radio broadcasts in One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note. It was recorded in March and May of 1965 by DJ Alan Grant for radio broadcast; while recording for broadcast, many hosts would usually just drop in on a session and tape the band for under an hour and take no note of catching a performance from the beginning. That rule applies here

Having recharged his legendary status on 2005's spectacular Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane: At Carnegie Hall, a previously unheard "lost" recording from 1957, the late John Coltrane solidifies his refreshed standing with a new generation of jazz fans with this exciting discovery by his own quartet. Recorded in 1965 at New York's Half Note club, One Down, One Up isn't as stunning a find as the Monk album.

Recorded 1965 at the Half Note, New York City: disc 1 on March 26; disc 2 on May 7 These tracks are receiving their first authorized release. Mastered at Foothill Digital/NYC. Mould SID Code (CD 1): IFPI 0316.

Blue Train, Coltrane's sole date as leader for Blue Note, featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan, bassist Paul Chambers, and trombonist Curtis Fuller, is often considered his best album from this period. Four of its five tracks are original Coltrane compositions, and the title track, "Moment's Notice", and "Lazy Bird", have become standards. Coltrane formed his first quartet for live performances in 1960 for an appearance at the Jazz Gallery in New York City. After moving through different personnel, including Steve Kuhn, Pete La Roca, and Billy Higgins, he kept pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Steve Davis, and drummer Elvin Jones. Tyner, a native of Philadelphia, had been a friend of Coltrane for some years, and the two men had an understanding that Tyner would join the band when he felt ready.

This is the first full release of radio broadcasts from two appearances by the John Coltrane Quartet at New York's Half Note on March 26 and May 7 1965 - tapes discovered in the 1990s by 'Trane's sax-playing son Ravi, but which had already been circulated and studied by many awestruck saxophonists, including Mike Brecker, Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman
