An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone
This article presents the discography of the jazz saxophonist and band leader John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967). Coltrane participated in his first recording sessions while enlisted in the Navy from August 6, 1945, to August 11, 1946. He performed eight numbers in a pickup band that included trumpeter Dexter Culbertson. These were private recordings not made for official release.
Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. This is a type of best of both worlds in terms of jazz for me right here. By 1962, Coltrane had settled in with what would be known as his classic quartet which lasted for four solid years. This quartet featured Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano. For this recording, Tyner opted to step aside and let another legend tickle the ivories. By 1964, Coltrane’s quartet was at the peak of their career and considered the best jazz group of the time. Coltrane had gone through a lot at this point, battling with drugs and other personal issues while trying to maintain his playing. By then, he had become very spiritual, turning to his faith in his times of need.
