As a leader, Charlie Parker recorded for Savoy and Dial during 1945-1948 and then for Verve exclusively (at least in the studios) during 1949-1954. This remarkable ten-CD box set, which adds quite a bit of material to an earlier ten-LP set, contains all of these recordings plus Bird's earlier appearances with Jazz at the Philharmonic. In addition, this box has all of the "Bird and Strings" sides, his meetings with Machito's Cuban orchestra, the 1950 session with Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, small-group dates (including a 1951 meeting with Miles Davis), odd encounters with voices and studio bands, the famous "Jam Blues" with fellow altoists Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter, and his final recordings

Charlie "Bird" Parker is considered one of the most influential jazz musicians. The saxophonist played a leading role in the development of bebop, which eventually became an international movement. In 1949 Bird left the . and toured Europe, where he popularized jazz and earned the nickname 'Zoizeau. This is the saxophone section of Jay McShann's Orchestra in 1941. Bird is second from the left. We think it's John Jackson on the left and the other two are possibly Harold Ferguson and Bob Mabane.
Charlie Parker, the virtuoso alto saxophonist who started the bebop movement in jazz, gave a jaw-dropping performance with Joe Timer's orchestra at the Club Kavakos in Washington, . Eight songs taken from that concert (where Parker played a plastic saxophone) were released in 1983 by Elektra Records. Recently, producer Bill Potts has unearthed two more . concerts (both from the Howard Theater), and Blue Note Records has released selections from all three performances as The Washington Concerts. The eight songs with the orchestra blend big band swing with bebop, while the six unreleased tracks lean toward bebop. Listeners get to hear Parker in a quartet setting that included Max Roach on drums. It's pure magic when Roach and Parker trade fours on "Ornithology," "Cool Blues" and the lightning-fast "Anthropology.
