Norman "Hurricane" Smith (22 February 1923 – 3 March 2008) was an English musician, record producer and engineer. Smith was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, and served as an RAF glider pilot during World War II. After an unsuccessful career as a jazz musician, Smith joined EMI as an apprentice sound engineer in 1959. Smith was the engineer on all of the EMI studio recordings by the Beatles until the autumn of 1965, when EMI promoted him from engineer to producer
Hurricane Smith was 49-years-old when scoring his one and only US hit with Oh Babe, What Would You Say charting at Billboard Talk about a midlife career change. The British Smith whose first name was Norman played drums but made his reputation behind the music scenes. He was a prominent sound engineer who worked on the Beatles’ EMI recordings (John Lennon called him Normal Smith for his steady demeanor) and turned producer including Pink Floyd’s early albums. Liza Minnelli covered the song for her 1973 album The Singer. Smith recorded his self titled debut album in 1971. Another single Don’t Let it Die reached UK Oh Babe, What Would You Say caught on despite being an old fashioned sounding love song with a Dixieland feel and sung by Smith’s odd nasally voice. Smith never followed up his initial success and die din 2008.
Smith Hurricane Super Hits Of The 70's:Have A Nice Day, Volume 10 Oh, Babe, What Would You Say? Have I a hope or half a chance, To even ask if I could dance with you? Yoo-hoo, Would you greet me or politely turn away? Would there suddenly be sunshine on a cold and rainy day? Oh, babe, what would you say? For there are you, sweet lollipop, And here I am with such a lot to say. Hey-hey, Just to walk with you along the Milky Way, To caress you through the nighttime, Bring you flowers every day.
