They bring together all the studio recordings Cziffra made for EMI and Philips, from his first 25 cm, 33 rpm microgroove LP, released in 1956 when he arrived in Paris, to the last sessions in the Saint-Frambourg chapel in Senlis in May 1986 a few years before he died. Cziffra strove for perfection and often rerecorded the same works. It seemed valid to run the risk of redundancy and include all the versions he made of these: though similar, they varied considerably with different moods or new perceptions of the piano’s resources.

In the studio, Cziffra is most known for his dazzling recordings of Franz Liszt's virtuoso works. He also recorded many of Frédéric Chopin's compositions and those of Robert Schumann. Georges Cziffra is, without doubt, the original full-throttle pianist. When he put the pedal-to-the-metal, so to speak, virtually no other performer could touch him for sheer, unbridled virtuosity. This recording of ten of the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies form EMI Classics Great Recordings of the Century is proof positive of my claim. Just listen to N. in C-sharp minor ( you know the one ) and you will be absolutely convinced. This is the cd that made me an instant Cziffra devotee. True, some of his other recordings could be below the.
