The title of guitarist Jimmy Herring's second fully instrumental effort is an indication of the music inside. It's a genre-hopping jaunt that bounces from retro-swing to bluesy, Jeff Beck-circa-Blow by Blow-fusion, into bluegrass, funk, and progressive jazz. Noticeably absent are the extended Southern jams that pay Herring's bills in his full-time position as lead guitarist for Georgia's veteran Widespread Panic. But that's how it should be for an amazingly talented musician looking to establish his versatility away from the music he's best known for.
On his previous album Lifeboat, Jimmy Herring set off down the road committed to being a solo artist, and while he did have some sensational guests stop by to lend a hand, it seems that those collaborations reinforced the notion that he sincerely enjoys being part of a collective, perhaps the band leader, yet certainly thriving on the advantages of a core group. of players as he does here on Subject To Change Without Notice, who excel at being part of a whole, tailoring ideas and concepts to Jimmy’s needs, and he in turn, embracing their skills and visions for his projects.

A A. Jimmy Herring Subject to Change Without Notice Abstract Logix. No other guitar player has weaved through the jam-band scene quite like Jimmy Herring. Starting with Aquarium Rescue Unit, Herring has cranked out twin-guitar rock with the Allman Brothers, explored spacey jams with The Dead, and is currently with Southern rockers Widespread Panic. Although his previous gigs showcased a down-and-dirty Americana approach, his personal tastes lean more towards jazz/fusion

Kudos to Jimmy Herring and the other musicians for their collaboration with John McLaughlin. To my ears, this music is the best recording by John McLaughlin in many years. Herring matches McLaughlin and sometimes quotes from him without imitating him. McLaughlin has not used this rock tone in decades, and it takes us back to "The Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire. His playing is fiery, but more soulful than I have heard before. He seems to use space more frequently also. I was surprised that "A Lotus on Irish Streams" as performed without acoustic instruments (as it was originally) and that it changed pace midway to make it more intense and less melancholic.
Jimmy Herring: When you're this close to it, it's hard to know, but you're hoping for something like that. I just know that John Keane, who produced this album, is someone I've wanted to work with for a long time. I did work with him on an album he produced for Widespread Panic, and he's a friend of mine. But the longer I talked to him about it, the more I realized I didn't want to coproduce the album. I wanted him to produce it, but I wanted the final say on my own performances. When you work with producers they sometimes make you keep stuff that you know you can do better. Selected Discography. Jimmy Herring, Subject to Change Without Notice (Abstract Logix, 2012).
