Pieces of the Sky is the second studio album by American country music artist Emmylou Harris, released in February 1975 through Reprise. Although she had released the obscure folk-styled Gliding Bird five years earlier, Pieces of the Sky became the album that launched Harris's career and is widely considered to be her début. In those intervening years she forged a musical relationship with Gram Parsons that altered the musical direction of her career.

The first five albums Emmylou Harris made for Warner Bros launched the former high-school beauty queen as a figurehead of a new kind of country music, mixing an informed traditionalism with a free-ranging imaginative scope. Her deceased mentor, Gram Parsons, would surely have been proud

Elite Hotel was Harris' second album to be released in 1975, preceded by the widely acclaimed Pieces of the Sky. Elite Hotel surpassed it on the Billboard charts, becoming Harris' first country album. The album yielded two country singles: "Together Again" and Harris' version of the Patsy Cline hit "Sweet Dreams", and "One of These Days" made it to the spot. Though technically Harris' first album, she subsequently disowned the record and regards 1975's Pieces of the Sky as her first "official" album. However, in 2007 on the Songbird boxed set of rare material from Rhino Records, an alternate, slightly shorter take of the song "Clocks" from the Gliding Bird sessions finally saw the light of day.

Harris' momentous 1975 major-label solo debut PIECES OF THE SKY features previously unreleased versions of "Hank And Lefty" and "California Cottonfields. Arguably Emmylou Harris' best album featuring some fantastic songs. Pieces of the sky, is a country masterpiece. Boulder to Birmingham, is probably Emmylou's greatest original song, a lovely number. Elsewhere, there's if I could only win your love, too far gone, and an achingly beautiful version of The Beatles, for no one. An excellent country record, and my favourite Emmylou Harris album.

Pieces of the Sky was a Top Ten country album and she took the Louvins’ If I Could Only Win Your Love, with harmonies from Herb Pedersen, into the Top Five. But, in addition to the success of that LP, Harris would release a Christmas single, Light of the Stable, with Linda Ronstadt, Parton and Neil Young on harmony, and another full album, Elite Hotel, which hit stores just before the end of the year. Elite Hotel continued the eclecticism established by the previous LP, opening just as that album had with a Rodney Crowell tune, Amarillo, penned with Harris
