The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012, are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach. They are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717–23, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen. The title given on the cover of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso (Suites for cello solo without bass).

La sixième suite s’adressa peut-être, plus probablement, à un violoncello piccolo, un instrument que Bach, son possible inventeur, utilisa dans plusieurs de ses cantates écrites à Leipzig (1724–1726). D’un autre côté, bien des violoncelles de l’époque comptaient cinq cordes, et Bach le savait sans doute: l’une de ses premières cantates, Gott ist mein König (BWV71), paraît en requérir un. En fin de compte, il semble que ces six suites soient toutes bel et bien pour violoncelle. La sonorité d’un violoncelle à cinq cordes est tellement plus grêle que celle du Stradivarius dont je me suis servi pour les quatre premières suites-mais aussi du Guadagnini que j’ai utilisé pour la cinquième (à cause de l’accord différent)-que j’ai pensé qu’elle serait décevante; or la sixième suite doit être tout sauf décevante!
