About Asleep In The Back. The title track from Elbow’s debut record, Garvey said of the song in 2009: We only added this after the album was finished, bizarrely. Quite often when you’re in love you find yourself testing your partner in the early stages of a relationship; telling them all the naff things about you, the dark stuff about you – almost testing how far their love goes (at least I used to do so). It was wonderful working with Ben Hillier, and this track, I think, is sonically one of the most interesting we did with him. "Asleep In The Back" Track Info.

In 2002 the album was re-released worldwide to feature the newly recorded title song that had been released as a final double a-side single with "Coming Second", which became their first UK Top 20 single. B-Sides and rarities, including "Can't Stop" and the title song.

After all, Asleep in the Back is more about getting through and sustaining than it is flat-out moping or asking for a hug. The tempos might not ever exceed mid-level, and half of the songs might exceed five minutes, but the record is anything but a difficult listen or tough to wade through. When the acoustic strumming, piano twinkles, liquid basslines, and muted horns are this engaging and well arranged, it's difficult to wring yourself from the web.

Take Elbow, for instance. That's a bleeding awful name for a band. It doesn't even lend itself to much of a backstory. What do you say to the interviewer when he asks how you chose your name? "Oh, well, we always wanted to name the band for the bony joint where the upper arm meets the forearm. Even the various idioms the word appears in- elbow room, elbow grease- can't help it out. And then there's the questions it raises. What does this band called Elbow sound like? What made them call themselves Elbow? Are they good? They don't sound very cool. By the time "Powder Blue" finally does roll around, Asleep in the Back's biggest flaw starts to come into focus. The song is actually pretty good taken on its own, with Garvey hitting a good falsetto on the refrain and the boys providing him with some fine backing vocals, but the entire album falls within a very narrow, and very slow tempo range.
