Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band signed to A&M and released two singles in 1966. The first was a version of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" that became a regional hit in Los Angeles. The followup, "Moonchild" (written by David Gates, later of the band Bread) was less well received Safe as Milk. After fulfilling their deal for two singles the band presented demos to A&M during 1966 for what would become the Safe as Milk album.

After two singles in the vein of "popular rhythm n' blues," the group underwent dramatic changes in their musical style, culminating in the Frank Zappa-produced album "Trout Mask Replica", a work conceived and directed by Don Van Vliet - better known as Captain Beefheart. He then followed a career as a solo artist, working with a rotating assembly of musicians comprising The Magic Band.

Their music was characterized by bluesy melodies, shambolic instrumentation, idiosyncratic, unbound timings, the growls and shrieks of Beefheart's vocals and his surreal, poetic lyrics.
The Legendary A&M Sessions Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. 2. Who Do You Think You're Fooling?
Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band signed to A&M and released two 1966 singles, a version of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" followed by "Moonchild," which was written by David Gates. Both were hits in Los Angeles. The band began to play music venues catering to underground artists such as the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. Sometime in 1966 demos of what became the Safe as Milk material were submitted to A&M. Jerry Moss (the "M" in A&M) reportedly described the new direction as "too negative" and they were dropped from the label
