Joy Division were an English rock band formed in Salford in 1976. The group consisted of vocalist Ian Curtis, t Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Sumner and Hook formed the band after attending a Sex Pistols concert. While Joy Division's first recordings were heavily influenced by early punk, they soon developed a sound and style that made them one of the pioneers of the post-punk movement.

Closer is the second and final studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 18 July 1980 by Factory Records. Produced by Martin Hannett, it was Joy Division's first posthumous album and was released two months after the suicide of the band's lead singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. The album reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and peaked at No. 3 in New Zealand in September 1981. Closer was also named NME Album of the Year.

Joy Division were a British rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. They were originally named Stiff Kittens (2), then changed their name to Warsaw (3) and finally became Joy Division before recording and releasing their first 7" EP " An Ideal For Living ".

Regarding Joy Division’s use of the image, Craft said it was a total surprise. A Cornell astronomy professor he was friends with was the first to bring the album to his attention. I went to the record store and, son of a gun, there it was, Craft said. So I bought an album, and then there was a poster that I had of it, so I bought one of those, too, just for no particular reason, except that it’s my image, and I ought to have a copy of it.

When Joy Division's debut record was released to the world on June 15 1979, it seemed unlikely that the Manchester band would have an impact upon the diverse music scene in Britain at the time. Unknown Pleasures should by no means be considered a 'guitar album'; however, it's hard not to admire the simplicity of guitarist Bernard Sumner's playing.

Produced by Martin Hannett. It was also the last song played live by Joy Division at their Birmingham University show, just over two weeks before Ian Curtis’s death.
