John Abercrombie chronology. Straight Flight (1979). Abercrombie Quartet (1980). During the 1970s he was a member of the New York Jazz Quartet and The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and in the 1980s a member of Quest. He has also appeared with Joe Lovano, Hank Jones and Paul Motian on Lovano's records I'm All For You and Joyous Encounter. Mraz is also known for performing solos with a bow in arco style, similar to that of Paul Chambers.
Abercrombie Quartet's most inspiring moments include the syncopated cooking on "Blue Wolf," the moody yet focused "Dear Rain," and the more rockist groove that drives "Riddles. It gets more ponderous on "Stray" (where the piano solo jumps from the tune's nearly washed-out body as a genuine surprise) and on the closing "Foolish Dog" - despite a fine mandolin-guitar break and woody, fluent solo from George Mraz. What's more, they remain thoroughly engaging after all these decades. Track Listing - Disc 1. Sample.

Guitarist John Abercrombie returns with a second album by his quartet featuring pianist Marc Copland, along with longtime rhythm partners Drew Gress and Joey Baron. Extolling 39 Steps, the group’s 2013 album, the Financial Times said: The emphasis is on subtle intrigue, flowing lyricism and the interplay between the leader’s warm, cleanly articulated guitar and Copland’s pian. ith bassist Gress and drummer Baron equally supple and sinewy companions.
Veteran guitarist John Abercrombie has been recording since the early ‘70s, but rarely does he lead bands with piano. 39 Steps is the notable exception, with pianist Marc Copland playing alongside bassist Drew Gress and drummer Joey Baron. The group members have played together in various configurations for decades, with Abercrombie and Copland particularly synced up throughout-most notably on the opening of the downtempo Vertigo and the lyrical Bacharach. Their past collaborations even include a duo album
