Chicago Underground Duo is an avant-garde jazz duo consisting of cornetist Rob Mazurek and t Chad Taylor. They formed in 1997, having both been members of Chicago Underground Orchestra. They have released numerous recordings on the Thrill Jockey label. Rob Mazurek was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1965, and played trumpet and cornet in high school. After high school he attended the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago, and began playing gigs with local jazz musicians.

Like Isotope, the Chicago Underground in its various numerical configurations is an adventurous fusion unit fronted by cornet player Rob Mazurek. The other constant is Chad Taylor. On the flowing, impressionistic "Welcome" (not the Coltrane tune), Parker adds some distortion to his guitar and Mazurek goes into gospelized Donald Ayler mode, sounding like he's gearing up for a march. It's a welcome change of pace, but the mood here tends toward the controlled, thoughtful and expressive.
The band take traditional jazz forms and mold them into a fusion of post-rock, electronic and indie rock. The rolling scale of album opener Tunnel Chrome or the oddly timed A Re-Occurring Dream are perfect examples of this. Generally the guitar lines that serve as the structure of the pieces are where the fusion elements come in to play. The repetitiveness of the lines gives a post-rock feel, while at other times the melodies on the guitar would not be out of place in an indie-rock song. The bass playing on the album is very traditional as Kupersmith steadily moves through the chord progressions.
As an album, Chicago Underground Quartet has the maturity and variety of a compilation drawn from a 10-year career - yet this is their debut album. If Chicago were an independent republic, CUQ would be their musical ambassadors, and wouldn't need labelling under any single style: they could appear at Womad billed as "World Music from ER country".
