This set and its companion, the eight-CD volume two, display all the strengths that made Emerson, Lake & Palmer one of the world's most popular bands during the '70s, and the weakness that comes with a trio's attempt to play complicated music. Keith Emerson was a virtuoso keyboard player, Greg Lake supplied a pleasant voice and flair for writing melodic songs, and Carl Palmer played drums as though he would perish if he stopped. Three of the programs in volume one either support or introduce material from the Trilogy album. Surprisingly, the title cut was not on the play list. Trilogy" was one of ELP's best moments, particularly the hard-hitting coda.
The Curse Of Baba Yaga. Written-By – Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The Hut Of Baba Yaga.
Live, released in 2001. Songs, Tracks Listing. DISC-1 1 Sept 1971 Live at "Stomping Encore" Gaelic Park, NY THE STRATASPHERE VS THE SPECTRE 1 The Barbarian (5:37) 2 Take A Pebble/Piano Variations/Take A Pebble (Conclusion) (20:07) 3 Tarkus: Eruption/Stone Of s/Manticore/The us (25:30). I love the first show in particular being such a HUGE fan of their debut album, the Barbarian in particular. The energy and power that made Emerson Lake and Palmer's show such an event are very apparent on listening to the shows. Particularly interesting are how they tackle Tarkus with small but noticeable changes in the arrangements first from the studio version then through the year and a half that this set covers.
The Original Bootleg Series from the Manticore Vaults. The Original Bootleg Series from the Manticore Vaults is a four-volume "official bootleg" release by Emerson, Lake & Palmer on Castle Records containing live recordings. Each of the four volumes comprised four shows and contained seven or eight CDs. A two disc set of highlights from the first two volumes was released under the name Best of the Bootlegs in 2002.
These two releases are proof positive that Emerson Lake and Palmer are the ultimate musical equivalent of LSD - they take you to heaven or hell, and there's absolutely no halfway house. All the usual suspects are here, from the aforementioned mythical beast "Tarkus" to their legendary renditions of bona fide classical pieces such as "Pictures At An Exhibition" and Aaron Copland's "Hoedown" which, under Emerson's nimble fingers, tore down the house at the beginning of every gig. While the sound - mainly taken from audience tapes - is invariably rough, the sheer excitement of a band at its peak and conquering the colonies is undeniable.
Keith Emerson was a virtuoso keyboard player, Greg Lake supplied a pleasant voice and flair for writing melodic songs, and Carl Palmer played drums as though he would perish if he stopped. But the group lacked the depth of fellow progressive rock bands, such as Yes and King Crimson. Those groups supplied multiple lead instrumentalists – Yes with their guitar/keyboard tandem and Crimson with their venerable guitarist, Robert Fripp, and a series of cohorts who played saxophone, violin, or second guitar. But the band could flat-out play, and their body of work held up better than many critical darlings. The Original Bootleg Series From Manticore Vaults, Vol. 1 is a boxed set. The four inner sleeves retain their original bootleg appearance.

Works Volume 2 is the sixth studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1977. Unlike Works Volume 1 (which consisted of three solo sides and one ensemble side), Works Volume 2 was a single album and it was seemingly a compilation of leftover tracks from other album sessions. While many derided the album for its apparent lack of focus, others felt that it showed a different side of the band, with blues, bluegrass and jazz being very prominent as musical genres in this recording.
