Emerson, Lake & Palmer is the debut studio album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in the UK in November 1970 on Island Records (catalog no. ILPS 9132). The album's initial North American release was several weeks later, in January 1971, on Atlantic Records' Cotillion Records subsidiary (catalog no. SD 9040). Recording took place at Advision Studios in July 1970 when the group had yet to perform live, and lasted for three months.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer helped to usher the classical style of progressive rock. When they respectively left The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster and came together as a trio, finding that their playing styles were complimentary, they created the first progressive rock supergroup. Dominated by Emerson’s neo-classical abilities, The Nice was the first symphonic rock band to adeptly fuse true classical motifs and passages with psychedelic rock and jazz.

Along with Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and Rush, Emerson Lake and Palmer ushered in the Prog era and as one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970's having sold over 40 million albums. ELP's dramatic flair, sincere passion, labyrinthine song structures, and symphony-worthy virtuosity proved that classical rockers could compete for arena-scale audiences as the band headlined stadium tours around the world. Considered by many to be one of rock's original first super-groups, Emerson Lake & Palmer formed in England in 1970 consisting of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). The band created a brand new world of music, combining classical and symphonic rock fused with beautiful vocals.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Originally released in 1970, the debut album from the newly formed supergroup combined musicianship and showmanship in a glowing ball or energy. The keyboard-dominated instrumentals and romantic ballads clearly showcased each of the three members' individual talents, and demonstrated the variety of influences each artist brought with them to the band.
