The Tallis Scholars is a British professional early music vocal ensemble normally consisting of two singers per part, with a core group of ten singers. They specialise in performing a cappella sacred vocal music. The group was formed in 1973 by Peter Phillips, who in 1972-1975 was an organ scholar at St John's College, Oxford and studied music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold.

Nicolas Gombert Composer. Peter Phillips Conductor. Author: Fabrice Fitch. Gombert Magnificats 1-4. Magnificat I (Primi Toni). Magnificat II (Secundi Tuni). Magnificat III (Terzi Toni). Magnificat IV (Quarti Toni). In fact The Tallis Scholars’ general approach is sanctioned to some extent by the music‚ since Gombert’s method is so singleminded as to give the impression of a superbly conditioned machine (an analogy that I have sometimes used in describing The Tallis Scholars themselves). It is also true that in these pieces the composer seems deliberately to have honed his tools down to a minimum.

Temporarily out of stock.
