The Electric Prunes sound like a different band on this disaster of a concept album, a rock opera with religious leanings and even songs sung in latin. However, the Prunes allowed classical composer David Axelrod to write, arrange and conduct the whole project. In the beginning, the band and their producer, Dave Hassinger, thought that this album would make the Electric Prunes more famous and respected than ever. They broke up after this album. Released in 1967 and 1968 these Electric Prunes albums were certainly something different ie progressive, psychedelic, religious rock. The Mass In F Minor is best known for the song ‘Kyrie Eleison’ which was featured in the movie soundtrack of Easy Rider. Instrumentally the Prunes only appeared on the first three tracks.
Mass in F Minor was released in January 1968 and reached number 135 on the Billboard 200. Photos of the band appeared on the back of the record sleeve, though with the band's previous guitarist James 'Weasel' Spagnola shown, rather than Gannon. Mercifully, this all ended and as we were leaving a few 'fans' said, 'We didn't know you guys were into avant-garde jazz.
