Eschewing expectations, James instead opts for a more traditional, straight-ahead treatment of the nine tracks on Yesterday I Had the Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday. Proving himself a nuanced vocalist and competent interpreter, James delivers a pleasant collection of covers that, in hewing close to the originals and rarely straying from the beaten path, play as little more than mildly enjoyable retreads of songs given more gravity elsewhere. Working with a somewhat subdued trio, James is afforded ample room to emote and explore the melody of each song
Acclaimed vocalist José James pays tribute to legendary singer Billie Holiday in honor of the 100th anniversary of Holiday’s birth in 2015. James celebrates the woman he refers to as his musical mother with this stunning set of nine songs written or popularized by Holiday. The album, produced by Blue Note president and acclaimed musician Don Was, features a stellar band including pianist Jason Moran, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Eric Harland. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – Universal Classics & Jazz Studio Masters.
But Jose James is something else, and his new album, Yesterday I Had the Blues (Blue Note), goes down like a rare vintage port on a chilly night. This is one of several Billie Holiday tributes in her centenary year, and James whisks a blend of sorrow, desire, and wistfulness into such anthems of achy romance as "Body and Soul," "I Thought About You," "Lover Man," "Fine and Mellow," and, leading things off, "Good Morning Heartache. James has chops-check out his spine-tingling falsetto on "Tenderly"-and enough self-assuredness to hold a note that's slightly off-key, for quite a while, until the chord comes around and makes it right.
James’s silky purr, eerily calm, adds wistfulness to nine classic Holiday songs, in honour of Lady Day’s upcoming century. Next month sees what would have been Billie Holiday’s 100th birthday, and prominent among the tributes are Cassandra Wilson’s Coming Forth By Day (a personal, genre-blending re-examination, out on 10 April), and this more generically faithful interpretation of nine classic Holiday songs from the fine New York vocalist José James. James calls this set a tribute to his musical mother, and it partners him with that most constructively supportive of jazz pianists, Jason Moran, and the bass/drums pairing of John Patitucci and Eric Harland.

José James - Fine and Mellow Lyrics. My man don't love me Treats me oh so mean My man, he don't love me Treats me awful mean He's the lowest man That I've ever seen. He wears high-draped pants Stripes are really yellow He wears high-draped pants Stripes are really yellow But when he starts in to love me He's so fine and mellow. Love will make you drink and gamble Make you stay out all night long Love will make you drink and gamble Make you stay out all night long Love will make you do things that you know is wrong. But if you treat me right daddy I'll stay home every day If you treat me right daddy I'll stay home every day But you're so mean to me, baby.
