SOCRATES DRANK THE CONIUM to some extent were the Greek variant of the British trio CREAM, the backbone of the group was guitarist Yannis Spafas and bassist Antonis Turkogiorgis, the drummers changed quite often - so before recording the album Taste Of Conium drummer Elias Bucuvalas changed Giorgos Trantalidis. In addition to their own things, Socrates did not hesitate to make cover versions of famous rock hits of its time, especially the songs of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Rolling Stones. In Taste Of Conium got a cover on (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, which here was renamed.

Well, that’s what happened when the oddly monikered Socrates Drank the Conium laid down the tracks for this, their 1972 self-titled debut album. Underground is mellow but with style and just enough reckless abandon (check out the solo) and provides a nice place to take a break as song 8 of 9; closer Starvation ends things off as a solid, heavy-hitting rocker that breaks down into a sudden funk groove to end of the album; it’s a sound the band does surprisingly well.
