Black Market Music is the third studio album by English alternative rock band Placebo. The album took nine months to record, from between late 1999 to mid 2000; the longest that the band have ever spent recording an album to date. It was released on 9 October 2000 by record label Hut. Four singles were released from the album: "Taste in Men", "Slave to the Wage", "Special K" and "Black-Eyed".
Black Market Music received a generally favourable critical response, though a less enthusiastic reception than previous records. Dale Price of Drowned in Sound called it "a heavily revised upgrade of their back catalogue Track listing. All tracks written by Placebo, except where noted.
The title alone justifies my concerns. Not only does it cause us to think that the music is illicit and illegal, it also overtly references one of London's hippest record shops, Black Market Records. As I suspected, Placebo retread the catchier moments from 1998's Without You I'm Nothing on Black Market Music, and roughen them up just enough to ensure top billing on commercial alternative playlists. Molko begs us to change our taste in men while he simpers and kills "time on Valentine's/ Waiting for the day to en. Molko also reveals, intentionally or otherwise, that "it's been this way since Christmas time.
