Townes is the 13th studio album by alternative country singer Steve Earle, released in 2009. It is an album on which he pays tribute to his friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt by covering his songs. According to a New West Records press release, "The songs selected for Townes were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to (not including selections featured on previous Earle albums)

Steve Earle first met Townes Van Zandt in Houston in the early 1970s, when the former was just a teenager and the latter had a couple of well-made, if not especially strong-selling, albums full of dusty melodies, desperate blues riffs, and heartbreaking metaphors. So a full album of Van Zandt covers was inevitable- the culmination of Earle's ade admiration. In fact, it's surprising that Townes, as the album is titled, didn't arrive sooner.

In his brief liner sketch on this album of Townes Van Zandt covers, songwriter Steve Earle writes: "I always read everything Townes told me to read. All of us did; we who followed him around, or simply bided our time in places along his migratory path, for we were indeed a cult, in the strictest sense of the word, with Townes at its ever shifting center. While what it was he read isn't worth spoiling here, it's the last part of that long sentence that really matters.

Notable guest appearances on the album include Tom Morello (of Rage Against the treet Sweeper Social Club) playing electric guitar on "Lungs", and Earle's wife Allison Moorer singing backing vocals on "Loretta" and "To Live Is to Fly". Earle and his son, Justin Townes Earle trade verses on "Mr. Mudd & Mr. Gold". He is backed by The Bluegrass Dukes on "White Freightliner Blues" and "Delta Momma Blues".

The following year, he contributed backing vocals to Clark’s debut masterpiece Old No. 1 - singing on Desperados Waiting for a Train with Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris and Sammi Smith - and joined his touring band as a bass player. Steve Earle, above in Greenwich Village, has a new album of songs by his mentor Townes Van Zandt. In a way, however, Van Zandt’s reward was the legend that followers like Mr. Earle helped foster. To this day he is the subject of tales that are told and retold, embellished and laughed over, whenever anyone who met him has a willing audience.
